MAVEN vs MANGALYAAN

Time to capture Red Planet.

First ever Mission to Red planet was done long ago in 1960s, since then there are several mission carried out by different Space Agency. NASA is the first space agency to enter Red planet in 1965. Since then there are several mission carried out by NASA to discover details about Dead planet.

Latest from NASA is Mars Atmosphere and Volatile Evolution (MAVEN) space probe to study Martian atmosphere.

Mission Planned: Sep 15,2008

Mission Launched: Nov 18,2013

Objectives of MAVEN:
  • Solar Wind Electron Analyzer (SWEA) - measures solar wind and ionosphere electrons
  • Solar Wind Ion Analyzer (SWIA) - measures solar wind and magnetosheath ion density and velocity
  • SupraThermal And Thermal Ion Composition (STATIC) - measures thermal ions to moderate-energy escaping ions
  • Solar Energetic Particle (SEP) - determines the impact of SEPs on the upper atmosphere
  • Langmuir Probe and Waves (LPW) - determines ionosphere properties and wave heating of escaping ions and solar extreme ultraviolet (EUV) input to atmosphere
  • Magnetometer (MAG) - measures interplanetary solar wind and ionosphere magnetic fields
Remote Sensing (RS) Package
  • Imaging Ultraviolet Spectrometer (IUVS) - measures global characteristics of the upper atmosphere and ionosphere
Neutral Gas and Ion Mass Spectrometer (NGIMS) Package
  • Measures the composition and isotopes of neutral gases and ions

Budget $671 million because of its objective it reached large amount.

Similar to NASA, ISRO has also planned Mars mission Mangalyaan.

Mission Planed: 2010

Mission Launched: Nov 05,2013

Objectives:

The primary objective of the Mars Orbiter Mission is to showcase India's rocket launch systems, spacecraft-building and operations capabilities.Specifically, the primary objective is to develop the technologies required for design, planning, management and operations of an interplanetary mission, comprising the following major tasks:
  • design and realisation of a Mars orbiter with a capability to perform Earth-bound maneuvres, cruise phase of 300 days, Mars orbit insertion / capture, and on-orbit phase around Mars;
  • deep-space communication, navigation, mission planning and management;
  • incorporate autonomous features to handle contingency situations.
The secondary objective is to explore Mars' surface features, morphology ,mineralogy and Martian atmosphere using indigenous scientific instruments.

Budget of MOM is $75 million.

This itself shows that MAVEN objectives are beyond MOM.But we should be proud of our Space agency ISRO for showing what Indian can do in short period of time with limited resource.

Proud of both NASA and ISRO.
